Active Solar Water Heaters:
This system comes with two options

  • Direct circulation system, where the household water is circulated through collectors.  This system works effectively in the climatic conditions where it seldom freezes.  
  • Indirect circulation system facilitates circulation of non-freezing, heat-transfer water through collectors and heat exchanger.  The water thus heated circulates through  the system for domestic use.  This system is especially useful in the places which witness freezing temperatures most of the  times.

Passive Solar Water Heaters:
This system also comes with two options :

  • Integral Collector Storage Passive systems (ICS)  in which the storage  tanks  are arranged  horizontally within the collector.  As the  collectors  receive the heat from the sunlight,  the water inside the tank  heats up.  This system works more effectively in the warm conditions.
  • Thermosyphon system : This system allows flow of  the water in such a way that as the  cooler water sinks the warm water rises and starts flowing.  However it is necessary to install the collector below the storage tank for natural

Main components of Solar Water Heater :

  • Collector : Most often this is installed on a roof, which allows effective absorption of sunlight and conversion into heat.  There are different types of collectors such as Flat-plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors.
  • Storage Tank : This tanks are useful to store the heated water for later use.  This tank can either be integrated with the collector or can be kept separate.
  • Heat Transfer fluid (in case of active system) which passes through the collectors and  transfers heat to the water in the storage tank.
  • Circulation pump (for active system) which facilitates movement of heat transfer fluid through the system.
  • Controller : This facilitates easy operation of the pump to optimize energy collection and storage.
  • Backup Heating  system :  This is generally powered by electricity or gas.  This is especially useful when there is inadequate solar energy.
